Comeback Medvedev Secures Maiden Title in Nearly 30 Months

19 of Medvedev's 21 victories have been achieved on hard courts

A comeback Medvedev claimed his maiden championship for over two years with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the competition title decider.

Medvedev, a former number one, has endured a difficult year, winning just a single victory at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's varied form on the professional circuit - and issues with his service game in particular - led to him exiting of the top ten and ultimately separating with long-term trainer his previous coach.

Now working with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, he has gradually progressed in the last few weeks - peaking in a closely contested three-set victory over Frenchman Moutet.

It is Medvedev's maiden championship after the Italian tournament and first on a hard surface after spring of the previous year.

Success also means Medvedev has achieved twenty-one victories at twenty-one different competitions.

"For the first time I'm at a event with my two daughters together, so to secure a trophy is especially meaningful," stated ranked player Medvedev.

"This victory is in tribute of my younger daughter my daughter, because the first title I won when my older daughter my daughter was born was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had lost his last six title deciders, including in Halle earlier this year.

The player's retrieving approach and regular emotional displays on court had caused observers to question if his ability to play at the elite level was finished.

However the athlete has made changes in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and play assertively, reinforced by an improved serve.

He recovered from a break down in the opening set against the difficult opponent, securing four of the last five points to take the lead.

The competitors traded service breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his maiden tour championship, gained dominance to create a final set.

He saved 4 early break points in a tight deciding set before the Russian won the break to that score to serve for the match.

Fittingly, he clinched the win with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to control a shot after over two and a half hours.
